BEING WITH BABY
We provide parents with the tools and strategies they need to navigate the challenges of raising their children by building positive connected relationships with them from an early age.
I founded Being with Baby because I wanted to assist parents in building positive connected relationships with their children - I understand personally how much of a struggle parenting can be, and this approach has helped me find confidence and direction as a parent.
Emily McDonald - Founder, Being with Baby
I am trained as an Early Childhood Teacher (B. Ed), and began working for the Department of Education in 2010.
At the end of 2011, I was awarded the Department's prestigious WA Beginning Teacher of the Year award, and was also awarded the Sangora Education Foundation Beginning Teachers' Award. These awards afforded me the opportunity to travel to Reggio Emilia, Italy, in 2013 to undertake study of the Reggio Approach. This wonderful experience cemented my belief in play-based learning and respectful approaches to teaching and raising children.
Furthering my training in respectful parenting and teaching, in 2015 I enrolled in the RIE® Foundations: Theory and Observation™ course in Los Angeles, USA. This course provides an overview of the Educaring® Approach including gross motor, fine motor, social-emotional development of the infant, designing the environment, planning the curriculum, and issues in parenting.
After successfully completing this course, I was invited to undertake the RIE® Practicum, as part of the RIE® Associate mentorship program. Completing my Practicum in 2016, I was then invited to become an intern in the RIE® Internship program, a step further towards becoming a RIE® Associate.
My passion has always been educating children, and the knowledge and skills that I have developed as a result of studying these wonderful respectful approaches has supported me personally as a parent. I now feel more confident and guided as a parent, and my relationships with my three beautiful children are continuously growing stronger.
I founded Being with Baby in 2016 as a way to offer these tools and skills to other parents and care-givers in early childhood settings, and I started running Educaring® Approach-inspired classes and workshop seminars.
In 2017, I became one of the founding Directors of ITANA - Infant and Toddler Advocacy Network Australia. ITANA is a not-for-profit infant and toddler advocacy network influenced and underpinned by the respectful approaches of Dr Emmi Pikler and Magda Gerber in early childhood settings around Australia, and our work demonstrated through the professional learning and development, networking, mentoring and support that we provide to the community.
